Winning teams for DreamCatchers Medtech Hackathon Hong Kong 2017

2017-07-03

10 students from Stanford University, together with 40 students and young entrepreneurs-to-be from Hong Kong have spent a week from June 18 to 25, 2017 to demystify the process of healthcare innovation in Hong Kong.

Co-organised by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), the DreamCatchers MedTech Hackathon Hong Kong 2017 was led by Dr Robert Chang and team from Stanford University, HKU and HKSTP.

The week long Hackathon gathered students from Stanford University and Hong Kong universities, and young professionals from HKSTP to experience Stanford Biodesign methodologies, design thinking, business model canvas, and to work in interdisciplinary teams to come up with prototypes of sustainable healthcare solutions.

Each team in the DreamCatchers MedTech Hackathon comes up with a clear need statement for an unmet need under the theme of "Enabling Medical Care Outside the Hospital". They then apply what they have learned in the Hackathon to create an innovative solution to address the unmet needs.

Three students of the Faculty of Engineering have teamed up with fellow participants to win:

THE CHAMPION TEAM (Franco Chan) (HKU ME UG Y3->Y4)

Project “EyeCare”: A way to improve eyelid hygiene in patients with evaporative dry eye disease to significantly reduce eye discomfort and inflammation.

1st RUNNER-UP TEAM (Carlos Ma) (HKU ME PHD Y4)

Project “femove”: A way to improve the comfort and mobility of patients on iron chelation therapy in order to increase medication compliance.
