In this presentation, materials informatics is introduced to materials people and community. Materials informatics employs techniques, tools, and theories drawn from the emerging fields of data science, internet, computer science and engineering, and digital technologies to the materials science and engineering to accelerate materials discovery and manufacturing innovations. The Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) is launched in 2011, in which there are
three types of core techniques, called Computational Tools, Experimental Tools, and Digital Data. The major challenge in materials research and development lies in the countless combination of elements in materials compositions, besides huge variations in materials microstructure, materials
fabrication and treatment, materials service environment and loading conditions, and economic performance of materials. In addition to high-throughput experiments, high-throughput computations, materials informatics is playing more and more important role in MGI in order to
discover novel materials in half-time and half-cost. Materials informatics integrates data science and materials science and engineering, where materials data are essential. Few recent publications on materials informatics are overviewed here to emphasize important roles of features (descriptors) and failed experiments, especially, the concept of adaptive development of
materials. A one-dimensional toy model is also presented here to illustrate the adaptive concept.
